Concentraction
My concentration is about my journey with my everyday life with my rare disease known as "Hemihypertrophy" and I struggle, and adapt to everyday situations. It is a genetic disease that causes one side of my body; the cells that control it, are unable to stop growing. Thus, my body is off balance, asymmetrical, and in pain all the time.
In-Depth Analysis
Often when people think of disabilities, they think of something visible to the human eye, perhaps a wheelchair or a cane of some sort. In 2004, two-year old, Leigh was diagnosed with Hemihypertrophy, a disease I never understood and still to this day I haven’t truly understood, but what I do know the condition results in the human form to be asymmetrical due to the cells’ inability to stop growing. Sure, some people are a little off balance...Yet for my case, my view wraps around it tightly. Throughout my concentration, I emphasized strong emotions of physical and mental pain from my experiences,
The first piece expresses the mental side. The ongoing struggle of trying to put myself back together from exercises to therapy; everything I built seems to be an unsolved jigsaw puzzle that breaks on itself. Compared to my 9th piece, shows my views of the doctor now, with my expression being unsure still as I have no idea of what is still going on, the symbol of the hospital is held firmly in my hands as a figure of hope; Each piece transfer different mediums to give emphasis of the theme, from softer appearances shining more to growth...And harsh mediums telling the pain of my story. A story built on two knee surgeries; to place, to take out growth plates to only grow further into my story.
